In-Depth Analysis
The ACH payment system is governed by Nacha and operated by the Federal Reserve and The Clearing House. In the second quarter, the system processed 9.3 billion payments, an increase of 6.2% compared to the same period last year; total payment value rose to $25.9 trillion, up 11.1% year-over-year.
Looking back at the first quarter, ACH network payment volume increased by 4.8% year-over-year, reaching 89 million transactions (note: the original text here says "8.9 million," which may be a typo, but the original number is retained), and total payment value increased by 9.3% year-over-year, reaching $24.1 trillion.
In the second quarter, the network's business-to-business (B2B) transaction volume grew by 9.9%, reaching 2.2 billion transactions; overall B2B payment volume for the first half of the year grew slightly faster, up 10.3% year-over-year, Nacha said in the press release.
The Nacha spokesperson added: "This growth reflects continued market demand for faster payment capabilities, covering B2B payments, payroll, account transfers, insurance claims, tax payments, cash concentration, and other time-sensitive transactions."
In the second quarter of this year, growth rates varied significantly across different payment methods. Internet payments (including consumer-initiated payments), despite a larger transaction volume base, grew by 7.6% year-over-year to 3 billion transactions, but person-to-person (P2P) payments grew faster, jumping 21% year-over-year to 136.6 million transactions.
Meanwhile, direct deposit payment volume increased by 3.6% year-over-year, reaching 2.3 billion transactions; healthcare payment volume increased by 2.3% year-over-year, reaching 141.4 million transactions, according to Nacha data.
As network transaction volume and value surge, its governing organization Nacha is adjusting the system to make it easier for financial institutions to use. In an announcement released in April, Nacha stated that starting September 17, 2027, it will raise the same-day transaction limit to $10 million.
